On 27th April 2021, Ofsted’s subject lead for history, Tim Jenner, released findings from Ofsted’s history subject inspections.
Between January and March 2020, Ofsted inspected the quality of history education across 24 outstanding primary schools. They spoke with leaders and teachers about their history curriculum, visited lessons, looked at children’s work and spoke to pupils.
The key findings point to a number of factors that indicate outstanding practice, including ‘building blocks’ of progress, secure understanding of historical concepts and chronology, the use of challenging historical vocabulary and support for SEN children.
