On 25th May 2021, Ofsted published their research review into mathematics. The purpose of the review was to identify factors that contribute to high-quality maths education, assessment, pedagogy and systems. The findings will inform Ofsted’s subject report about the teaching of Maths from Reception onwards.
In summary, the research review found that, despite English pupils achieving, on average, higher attainment than pupils in many other countries, the attainment gap between low and high achievers in England is wide. In addition, the report points to the large gap in attainment between disadvantaged and advantaged pupils and also highlights the issue of recruiting specialist maths teachers.
