On 10th July 2021, the Department for Education released guidance for schools around meeting the existing expectations for teaching early reading.
The document focuses on the early stages of teaching reading and the contribution of talk, stories and systematic synthetic phonics (SSP).
It supports primary leaders to evaluate their teaching of early reading and highlights best practice for improving early reading. In addition, the guidance helps schools to meet existing expectations as set out in the National Curriculum, EYFS Framework and Ofsted’s EIF.
